I am having serious doubts (and I know several of you are as well).
Getting on a plane soon so this will be short and sweet.
There are some serious problems within the Husker program right now. The bowl game pretty much exposed the numerous cracks in the foundation and facade that currently is Nebraska Football. And it starts with the head coach.
We could have easily won this game. Other than some junk points on a “hail mary” at the end of the half and one other pass play, we were beating the Cocks pretty good in the 1st half. The problem was that another half of football had to be played.
The 2nd half was one of the worst halves of football that I have ever seen a team dressed in red EVER PLAY! How damn embarrassing was that ?!?!
They quit, as they have three or four other times this year. After the missed FG in the 3rd, our offense was done trying. 18 plays for 18 yds….pathetic. Umpteen penalties (four on the same damn drive), no focus – no discipline.
At first I was pissed at the players. Then I quickly realized that focus and discipline starts at the top…with the head coach.
Make no mistake, I am not calling for a regime change…at least not for now. A fairly decent recruiting class continues to come together and I still hold out hope but several things must take place next year for me to continue to support this experiment:
- T Martinez. If this kid plays one more down as the starting QB it will be too much. If Bo cannot see that a change needs to be made there, then I’m sorry – but he doesn’t deserve to continue coaching our program. Better QB play will naturally diversify what we are doing on offense and take some pressure off of Rex. It would be a good thing all the way around.
- Defensive line scheme. I am not sure what the dance/scheme was for our DL but if we don’t get a true pass rush going instead of the “read and react” BS then I am done with the coach staff. Maybe the new DC has some ideas to get us back to a “fly around the ball” approach. I want DE like the Cocks had. We used to have talent like that…we need it again.
- Focus/determination/discipline. This team MUST have better focus, discipline and determination. No more excuses. No more stupid penalties, blown assignments, piss poor execution and NO MORE QUITTING. If this does not show marked improvement early next season, then this is a systemic problem within the program and that is all on the coaching staff.
That’s all I have for now. Sorry for the bad outlook but that is the way things appear to me from where I am sitting. But who know…it could turn around pretty quick and I can start pumping the sunshine again.
Maybe even by tomorrow. I will let you know how things look from Waikiki Beach.
